ABOUT THE ARTFORM

BHIL paintings are a form of painting from folk and tribal art that is practiced by the second largest tribe in India. These paintings were known as 'Bhil Pithora' paintings, however nowadays Bhil is the commonly used term.

It was a ritualistic form of art devoted to the gods of the tribe- Baba Pithora and others who are depicted on series of horses. Gradually, the subject of the painting has moved towards nature which is the prominent theme now.

Bhil painting is characterised by the use of multi-coloured dots as in-filling.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mrs. Geeta Baria is an internationally renowned Bhil craftswoman,. She comes from a family with no lineage in the craft that has gained her her identity. To her luck, she was married into a family of Bhil artisans. An uncle from the family taught her the basics of the art of Bhil painting.

Given her passion for the art, she has carved herself a name with her intricately patterned figures. She has been working for last 15 years.
