ABOUT THE ARTFORM
Bengal Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting format that narrates stories of epics and legends, woven in beautiful songs, known as 'Pater Gaan'.
Kalighat painting tradition started in 17th century as Patuas from nearby villages started settling outside the Kalighat temple in Kolkata that was attracting herds of devotees.
Hence, they found an opportunity of livelihood by creating quick paintings with bold strokes and minimal detailing that tourists could carry as souvenirs.
